Smoke on the Horizon

Curling my fingers around you like a Twizzler in my hand,

Chewing off the top and bottom carefully as not to be noticed.

A deep inhale brings a sigh of relief and a pang of worry.

You infiltrating my lungs as if long lost friends,

Sighing out the vapor is bittersweet-I don’t want to say goodbye but I want to say hello again and again and again…

How will I stop;

When will it end?

Upon Falling to Sleep

With all of the rain today, darkness comes as a sultry hot cloth covering the eyes of a migraine sufferer.

Star race around as if they were flakes in a snow globe.

The moon relaxes her body down, down, down almost to Earth.

My dogs easily fall asleep side by side with heads on my lap.

Now it is time for me to say Good Night Moon and slip into slumberland. Now it’s time for all good girls to go to sleep.

I am too exhausted to be bad.

Any Given Saturday

I take a breath, and

you are there. A moment ago

it had been weeks, months, too long.

I breathe you in and my heart settles.

We eat pizza and you steal some of my ice cream. We have conversations with depth and life and frilly, silly girl talk.

It’s time to go back to towns we hate, places we despise the conditions of, folks we love.

I breathe you in.

I breathe you in.

I breathe you in.

Gone.

I Am Can!

The greatest “I think I can” stories began with

I love I am.

A young shepherd boy runs out from King Saul to battle a giant (I think of I am)

A hundred year old man and his eighty year old wife have the promised son to build a nation (I think of I am)

A man and his family build an ark never having seen an ocean (I think of I am)

One spotless soul grieves to blood sweated forehead (I think of I am)

He is questioned, beaten beyond recognition by the crowd but not His disciples and carried His death token to the hill of Golgotha next to Sheol (I know I am can)

The body hangs from a tree and is taken to the tomb with a boulder rolled before it. (I know I am can)

Joy comes in the mourning and morning. “Why do you look for the living among the dead”? The women pick up spread along the Mary way to tell the disciples! (I knew I am could!)

Greater love has no man than this that He would lay down His life for His friends. (And, I thank I am)
